CP Sport Athletics Training
Saturday 21st November 2009.
Harvey Hadden Stadium
A most successful athletics training day was held on Saturday 21st November
in Nottingham at Harvey Hadden Stadium, Nottingham.
Thirty-five athletes attended the day.
There were 12 athletes who were totally new to CP Sport attending for the first time.
The morning started with everyone gathering for introductions and an outline of the day.
The athletes were split into 5 groups: wheelchair track racing, ambulant track, seated field and ambulant field.
The field athletes spent the morning doing technical work outside then in
the afternoon did conditioning work (medicine ball exercises and circuit training) inside.
The track athletes did an indoor session in the morning then worked outside on the
track in the afternoon. Unfortunately they got very wet as the heavens opened but in true British athletics style,
rain did not stop play!
Coaching was delivered by experienced CP Sport coaches and it was good to welcome
some athletes' personal coaches. Several coaches from main stream clubs attended to gain experience in
working with athletes with a disability.
Lunchtime was spent socialising with each other then one of the parents who has
been with CP Sport for a long time, held an informal session for the new parents to tell them about CP Sport.
The day was a huge success for athletes and coaches alike. The families enjoyed the
opportunity to meet and share concerns and ideas with other families. Having a disabled child can be a
very insolating experience but through their involvement with CP Sport many parents feel they have a
support network and lifelong friendships are formed.
