Cheshire Boccia International 2009

The weekend of 26th/27th July, 2009 saw the England Squad competing at a friendly International Competition in Wigan. This event saw 7 Nations competing over all classifications. England fielded a Team, 3 BC3 Pairs and a BC4 Pair.

The Competition was indeed highly competitive, seeing a number of athletes who had competed at the recent Paralympics in Beijing. For some of the players in attendance, it was their first experience of International play, so quite overwhelming. However, each and every player seemed to rise to the challenge and the play that was seen was intense and truly inspirational.

The Squad which consisted of Jaco Roux, Matthew James, Sean Francis, Liam Beresford, Cecilia Turk, Craig Johnson, Lee Maddison, Faye Stevenson, Ryan Paladino, Charlie Wilkinson and Emma Turner produced an amazing set of results. 2 Golds and 1 Bronze. The two golds were achieved by Liam and Ce and Charlie and Emma. The bronze by Faye and Ryan. Worthy of a mention is the truly outstanding feat from the BC4 players who managed to beat the Slovaks. In Beijing, the Slovaks won Bronze, hence our BC4 need to be applauded for their superb result.

Overall, the England Squad should be extremely proud, it was an excellent competition for us. At the closing ceremony after the medals and trophies had all been presented, the announcement was made as to the top Championship Nation. Another tremendous achievement saw the Squad pick up this most deserving cup. This shows just how committed the athletes were to prove that they were indeed worthy winners. Each and every one played to their full potential.

We the Management of the England Squad, stand up and applaud our athletes, Well Done, long may our success continue.

Written by a very highly elated England Manager. (Cassandra Turk)
