Junior Development Work
Swimming development Days are delivered at the request of school or clubs.
The aim of the day is to have fun and learn new aquatic skills. The days are open to participants
and teachers alike so not only do the swimmers have a positive experience but CP Sport will leave a legacy through the teachers and teaching assistants by giving confidence of working with children with CP in an aquatic environment.
Days can be run through the week or at weekends. The sessions are divided into
non-swimmers up to 25m and then swimmers from 25m upwards.
CP Sport is affiliated to the governing body of swimming, The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA).
As a follow on from development days there is liaison with ASA county development
officers who will then signpost any children to Learn to Swim lessons or clubs within the region.
Annual development galas are held which give young swimmers an opportunity to compete.
During 2009 a development gala will be held at Leek in Staffordshire with a view to holding 3 galas across the
country in 2010. The galas are a great opportunity to talent ID and filter swimmers through to regional or national
programmes also CP Sport use this competition to highlight swimmers to take part in CP Swimming Training Days
which are held 3 times a year at Nottingham University Pool. There is a CP Sport Swimming National Championships
annually in Nottingham.
Paralympian supports local swimming gala for disabled children
On Sunday 1st November the charity CP Sport (Cerebral Palsy Sport) ran its
annual swimming gala at Brough Park Leisure Centre, Leek. The gala was open to swimmers with cerebral palsy
and other physical disabilities. The charity was delighted that twenty swimmers registered for the event and
travelled from all over the country.
The gala is held to give young swimmers an opportunity to compete, and reach their goals.
It also gives the charity an opportunity to find emerging talent and filter individuals through to regional and national programmes.
CP Sport encourages the swimmers that attended the gala to continue swimming through its events programme.
Many CP swimmers have come through the competition structure and gone on to compete at paralympic level,
for example Jane Stidever who was our special guest at the gala who swam at the Athens Paralympics securing a gold medal.
CP Sport relies totally on the voluntary contributions to continue its life changing work.
One couple who have made a big difference this year and who attended the gala are Sue Hodgkinson and Brian Stephenson.
Sue and Brian held a spectacular summer ball at their home in August and helped to raise £2,800 for the charity.
The couple presented their cheque to Jane Stidever and her mother Jill who has volunteered for the charity for many years.
It is thanks to the dedication of people like Jill that CP Sport is the country's leading authority on sport f
or people with cerebral palsy.
CP Sport would like to thank Brough Park Leisure Centre and manager Kirsty Sales along with the hard working staff
who donate the pool free of charge every year, this is its 5th year.
